Needing a short break from butternut, grey, and pointy facial hair, I decided to paint up some AB test figures for British light infantry in the Peninsular War that I’ve had laying around for a couple of months.

I used my Osprey book ‘Wellington’s Peninsula Regiments (2), The Light Infantry’ as a painting guide, though in the interest of sanity, I simplified things as much as possible. The red on the figures is Vallejo Flat Red, highlighted with Vallejo Vermilion. It looks fairly accurate according to the color plates in my book, but I’m open to suggestions.
I shaded these guys with Army Painter Strong Tone, and it played hell with the off whites and lightened buff colors that I used on the belts, straps, pants, and facings. I think the sepia-toned wash that you get with Army Painter would probably look great at 28mm, but it makes these 15mm figures look overly dirty. Especially in photographs. On the other hand, APST works great on the red coat. I may experiment with a black ink wash for the whites and buff colors, and see how that goes.
These Napoleonic sculpts are tremendous-way better than the ACW figures I’ve been painting. The anatomical proportions are really elegant, and even in these three figures the body types vary. Pretty amazing.
Ok enough of my dalliance with 15mm Napoleonics- it’s back to the ACW grind from now until mid-December. My opponent and I have a test game for the Regimental Fire and Fury rules set scheduled for the 14th, and I need to have limbers for my artillery AND another regiment painted. Woe is me!
